Join us for a social evening to celebrate some exciting transitions in the borderland journalism landscape. We’ll welcome back Zahira Torres, the new investigations editor at the El Paso Times. Zahira was formerly the Austin bureau reporter for the Times before moving on to work for the Denver Post and then the Los Angeles Times. In her previous stint at the El Paso Times Zahira led the coverage that exposed  the EPISD cheating scandal.

We will also meet UT El Paso’s newest journalism professor, María de los Ángeles Flores, who comes to us from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas.  Maria began her academic career in communication studies for her bachelor’s degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila at Saltillo, México. She received her masters degree in radio-TV-film from UT Austin, where she also earned her Ph.D in journalism. Her areas of specialization include communication for social change, crisis communication, cross-cultural journalism, journalism trends and political communication.

This will be a casual gathering at JAWS member Kate Gannon’s home. There’ll be drinks and food. Bring a bathing suit and towel if you want to hang out in the pool. Feel free to bring a journalist who may want to become a new member of the Journalism and Women’s Symposium.
