As the world’s attention is on immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, reporters are hashing out how to cover the complex and nuanced stories that audiences crave. In this webinar, AP reporter Astrid Galván will go over little-known tips on covering the border, the often-elusive immigration authorities and the people who are most affected by the current crisis – immigrants and their families.

This session will include advice on how to find the right people for your story and how to approach interviews with people who are often traumatized and don’t speak English. We’ll also touch on using data to tell immigration stories that are often overlooked.

Astrid Galván covers immigration in Arizona for the Associated Press. She joined the AP in 2014 after several years in newspapers, first at the Arizona Republic and then at the Albuquerque (New Mexico) Journal, where she worked on a series of investigative stories into police shootings. Astrid grew up at the border and now covers everything from the separation of families to treatment of immigrants by border authorities. She lives in Phoenix with her husband, baby daughter and stinky dog.

Stories from the Border is free for Journalism and Women Symposium members and $25 for non-members. A video recording and slides will be send to those who cannot attend on Aug. 15.
