How should reporters respond to online or in-person harassment? What, if any, policies have changed over the years and how have those changes been received by the newsroom and readers? Are we too accessible? Does engaging with the audience have to mean subjecting yourself to cyberbullying and hate?

On June 5 at 6 p.m., we will host a JAWS happy hour discussion on workplace harassment and women in journalism with a leading researcher and one of only female newsroom leaders — Austin-American Statesman Editor Debbie Hiott and UT Professor Gina Chen.

Hiott has spent 28 years at the Statesman, working her way up from a part-time reporter to the top of the newspaper's masthead. Chen spent 20 years in the industry, mostly at the The Post-Standard in Syracuse, NY. She's extensively studied workplace harassment and has written specifically about online harassment and incivility against women reporters.

There will be a Q+A with our two panelists and then open it up to discussion. We hope to have an honest, inclusive and respectful discussion about some of the hardest things we as women deal with in this industry and how to overcome them.

Feel free to come and talk, or just listen. You can respond to this email with any questions. Click here to RSVP through Facebook.

It will be hosted at the Law Offices of Glasheen, Valles and Inderman at 1703 West Avenue just south of campus. Street parking is free after 6 p.m. Drinks and light snacks will be provided.
